Home / Health / Accuvision Clinic Challenges GMC's Persistent and Unfounded Scrutiny
Accuvision Clinic, a leading Manchester-based eye care facility operated by Asian doctors, is raising serious concerns about what it describes as the General Medical Council’s (GMC) racially biased and relentless campaign of investigation and scrutiny. Despite external inquiries from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and police deeming complaints against the clinic to be without merit, the GMC has continued with disciplinary hearings against Accuvision, sparking widespread concerns over the potential for bias within the regulatory body.
(Nicola Dowling and Sasha Rodoy )
Since 2017, Accuvision has faced multiple, unsubstantiated complaints, allegedly initiated by patient advocate Sasha Rodoy and BBC journalist Nicola Dowling. According to Accuvision, these individuals have used aggressive tactics to perpetuate a campaign of reputational damage against the clinic. In 2022, a tribunal on the case was disrupted when jury members reported feeling threatened, leading to their recusal. Despite this, the GMC opted to reopen proceedings in October 2024, where similar intimidation tactics were reported to have forced the panel chairman to step down.
The GMC and the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) have maintained silence on the matter, choosing not to respond to public inquiries, fueling frustration among those who believe that this silence implies a lack of accountability. Critics argue that the GMC’s actions reflect an institutional disregard for minority-led practices, suggesting that this case is part of a larger issue of systemic bias. Many are concerned that the GMC’s persistent actions send a message to minority professionals that success will be met with heightened scrutiny, casting a shadow over their reputation and achievements.
Accuvision Clinic and supporters of minority healthcare professionals are calling for the GMC to re-evaluate its approach to ensure fair and equitable treatment across the healthcare sector. The clinic’s owners and advocates argue that regulatory institutions must prioritize transparency and integrity, protecting all healthcare providers—regardless of background—under fair and impartial oversight. They assert that allowing such practices to continue unchecked undermines the foundations of an equitable healthcare system and sends a damaging message to the UK's diverse medical community.
